The First Truth - Golf is a Game of Skill; It is NOT About the Swing
"The ultimate judge of your swing is the flight of the ball." - Ben Hogan
In this first truth, Rick describes the skills golf demands: ball control, decision making and self management. It is these skills, not a text book swing, that determines success. Otherwise, how has Jim Furyk ended five of the last eight seasons ranked in the top five golfers in the world? Certainly no golf school uses his swing as the model for students.
So, good swing mechanics and movements promote the possibility of ball control, but they are not, in and of themselves, the skills needed to go low. Ball control can be acquired with a less than technically clean swing. And rigid conformity to a text book swing in no way ensures ball control. You have certainly seen both of these in action - the highly consistent player with a crazy-looking swing, and the player with tour tempo whose only consistent result is dragging you into the woods to help search for a ball.
