Truth #6 - Coaching Works

In Truth #6, Dr. Rick Jensen describes something that is at the core of our own Golf Matrix philosophy. He says, "Where lessons don't work, coaching does." In addition to teaching swing mechanics, ball flight laws and correct movements, a coach will help you transfer skills to the golf course, make good on-course decisions and manage your mental state in competition. A coach will advise you about your fitness and your equipment. In other words, a real coach will help you to shoot lower scores by helping you to learn the whole game, not just to swing the club.

Master the Game...

If all this sounds a bit familiar, it should. It's exactly what we mean when we say, "Master the Game, Not Just Its Techniques." Dom coined the phrase during his own playing career after spending over 200 hours with Rick. So, in each session, our coaches are thinking precisely that way. Here's what coaching looks like:

  • A coach suggests you keep stats so you can determine exactly which parts of your game provide the most opportunity for improvement.
  • He helps you learn new movements or feels with video or 3D and then has you drill using 3D or a training aid so he can observe you practice a new movement and guide you through it.
  • A coach prescribes drills and training aids and provides lesson notes so you know what and how to practice.
  • As you progress he will help you begin to transfer skills to  the course. He is likely to vary your targets or to hand you a different club for each shot. He may recommend a playing lesson so he can observe both your swing and your process on the golf course.

A coach is always pushing you up the four steps to mastery. Remember Truth #3?
